Reasons For Using Ethernet Over DS3

Over the years two disparate technologies have successfully served their purpose. They are Ethernet for LANs and PDH and SONET for the wide area information transport. Now the two are at cross roads where they need to change or merge. Change is expensive so merging is the best option and Ethernet over DS3 is the solution.

Ethernet is one of the oldest and yet the most versatile and scalable solution for most LAN solutions. So almost all enterprises have evolved their entire in-premise solutions based on the Ethernet technology. It is not surprising that companies do not want to change it as they start looking for better integration between their regional and main or head office.

On the other end of the spectrum, with the service providers, PDH and SONET or SDH has been the more reliable solution. These technologies were mainly built to support the growing number of telephone lines. Even the mobile phone lines that we have today are voice calls and hence use PDH solutions between the towers. As a result, for the service providers PDH networks are still useful and invaluable.

With PDH and related technologies lending themselves so well, almost all the WAN networks are based on these technologies. DS0 or voice channels are aggregated into DS1 which are then combined into DS3. These DS1 and DS3 aggregate lines can then be transported over SONET or SDH networks.

However, PDH or SONET and the Ethernet are quite contrasting technologies. Ethernet is all about framing and very little synchronization. The SONET is a completely synchronized solution where timing is absolutely important. Both the enterprises and service providers have already built their networks and changing them could mean a huge financial commitment which neither want to make.

Merging these two disparate solutions is the only way to break this deadlock. Ethernet over DS3 is the ideal solution for this problem. There are Ethernet over DS1 solutions, but given that DS1 is 1.5Mbps, the speeds that they offer are relatively lower. With DS3 link supporting Ethernet one can get up to 45Mbps of link capacity.

DS3 pipe also merges into SONET network easily so the long distance branches can also be easily connected using this solution. With framed Ethernet over DS3 solutions, the Ethernet links can be sent over SONET too. Thus, this is a great solution to blending the disparate networks with the enterprises and the service providers.
